The link to the right directs you to the NSW RFS website, providing a broad range of information about becoming a volunteer. There are many ways you can contribute without having to be a fire fighter.
Active Firefighting
Becoming an active firefighter with Matcham Holgate Brigade will teach you a
range of skills you would otherwise have never imagined. And everything you learn
you can qualify with formal courses and nationally recognised certification.
As well as ongoing training with the brigade, a range of formal courses are available
at District Headquarters in Kariong. The courses are presented by experienced senior members
of District brigades who are also volunteers.
As a new recruit, the brigade will teach the range of skill necessary to pass your first certification as a Bush Firefighter (BF). This will qualify you to be an active member of the brigade and be on call to attend Fire Calls.
From BF, the brigade will train you in a broader range of skills and experiences, and we will urge you to attend the Village Firefighter (VF) course. This will teach you a range of skills used in attending structure and vehicle fires.
The VF course is principally a pre-cursor to qualify as a Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus (BA) officer. This is a specialised role and often essential for a village firefighting brigade.
The next level of skill is attained with the Advanced Firefighter (AF) training. Firefighters are expected to have a depth of active experience before commencing this training. This level of training provides a broad range of information and equips the firefighter with the knowledge to lead a small crew if required.
At a brigade level, the most senior level of qualification is Crew Leader (CL), requiring a broad range of practical experience, a depth of knowledge regarding firefighting, and capable team leadership. An officer of the brigade is required to hold, or work towards, this qualification.
There are also a range of other specialist courses provided by the District, including First Aid, Chainsaw Operation, RFS Response and Off-Road Truck Driving, and so on.
